I want to live in a village in Vietnam, dig a well, help deliver a goat, and be able to stride tirelessly up and down mountains with a 100-pound load of rice on my back. I want to learn the gong-like syllables of Balinese and disappear for a year in the south pacific, working as an itinerant musician for an Indonesian puppet theatre. I want to be a rum-runner, with a ship I love more than any woman and skin like oiled leather and a name in every dive along the pacific rim. I want to be the best swordswoman in America. and write a breakthrough lesbian regency romance/mystery that spends 10 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. I want to be knighted by the Queen of England. I want to coin a spoonerism. I want a spaceship named after me. I want to look down at the earth and cover all of Florida with my thumb. I want to work on an Alaskan fishing boat. I want to build a house with my own hands, and take photographs for National Geographic. I want to be able to put out a match with a single-tailed whip. I want to fight a duel to the death. I want to own a pet tiger, fly around the world in a 2-seater Cessna, and dive down to see the Titanic. I want to buy a villa in Tuscany and conduct a passionate affair there with a Grecian archaeologist named after some ancient diety. I want to walk from Calais to Jerusalem. I want to learn to forge Old Master paintings. I want to hobo across America playing music on streetcorners for a year, though to do that I'd have to learn to play something a hell of a lot more portable than a dulcimer, and no-one really pays dusty looking harmonica players on street corners, so maybe not. I want to be able to lift a thousand pounds. I want to wear a dress worth a thousand pounds and dance a flawless tango with an Argentinian mob boss in a parisian cabaret lit by ten crystal chandaliers. I want to learn the Sitar, Bouzouki, Bodhran, and bagpipes. I want to learn Saami and live with the lapplanders, learning to herd reindeer and tan hides and becoming an initiate into their shamanic song tradition. I want to learn how to do one of those ear-piercing, supersonic, incredibe cattle-calls of the Swedish backland. I want to live in one of those recreated Iron-age villages and learn how to use a warp-weighted loom. I want to dog-sled across the Yukon. I want to go on walkabout across Australia, learning to eat & camp like the aborigines do. I want to be given a totem and learn its songline, and sing it across the territory of ten tribes. I want to be a sushi chef. With 35 different knives, each of which is indispensable. I want to buy a 500 dollar bottle of wine--good wine--and drink it with the ones I love. I want to learn Flamenco. I want to learn sumerian and ancient egyptian and chant the first poem written by the first author, a priestess of Astarte. I want the world. I want all the world. I want it like I want a sun-ripened orange: I want to suck it dry, probe it with my tongue, lick it from my fingertips, feel the sting of it on my lips when I'm done.
